Day 6 – Christmas of 1968 continued…

Give the gift of “Mamma” for Christmas. A perfect gift for daughters of any age!

My mamma and daddy were married for 26 years before their divorce. He just couldn’t come to terms with losing her. I really don’t think he wanted any of us to live if we couldn’t live together. When my mamma and I left that September evening, we left everything behind – most of our clothes, my toys, my dog. I did eventually get my dog back. But I was never to see my home or my daddy again.

“A cat and mouse chase began that would last for several months, with us homeless and with little money.”

“Many have asked my mamma what enabled her to survive those times. I suppose some might call it a “can do” spirit, a positive attitude, a cheerful outlook, or a “never give up” perspective. Mamma could never be brought down – for long, anyway.”

Day 5 – My story of Christmas of 1968 continues…

“Many times I’ve felt life was unfair – like nothing was going my way. In those times anger, disappointment, and depression victimized me: Poor me. It isn’t my fault. I don’t have a choice. There’s nothing I can do about the cards I’ve been dealt but accept them and suffer through it. Fortunately, my mamma – through her example – taught me a lesson long ago that helps me pull myself up when life knocks me down…”

“Mamma had taught me that God loved me; that God is good; that God is everywhere. She taught me the Bible stories of Daniel in the lions’ den and of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego being thrown into the fiery furnace. I think I was confident of God’s care, even though my life was apparently in danger and my future most uncertain and at risk.”

“What is perhaps most remarkable, as I look back on it now, is that my memory of that Christmas is not one of fear and uncertainty, but of peace. It’s amazing to see how, in the midst of such a violent and unstable time in my life, my memories could be so dear, so special. In fact, I’ve often said that was the best Christmas ever. How could that be true?”

My countdown to Christmas continues

“We strung popcorn and made paper strings. This, too, I remember, was fun.”

To give y’all a little more of an explanation of what you’ll read in the 2nd chapter of my book which recounts my memories of the Christmas of 1968….

My mamma and I were on a westbound journey from Georgia to Texas when we were literally “on the run” from my dad – “her bitter and angry ex-husband.” As I wrote,

“That Christmas found us renting a trailer in Beaumont, Texas. We stayed in trailer parks instead of hotels as we traveled west, to be more elusive as the chase continued.”

The description on the back cover of my book explains,

“Leaving Georgia with her mamma late one September night when her daddy was en route to end their lives marked the beginning of a lifetime of instruction.”

Twelve days of Christmas – Christmas of 1968

Give the gift of “Mamma” for Christmas! A perfect gift for “daughters” of any age!

In my book, The Gospel According to Mamma, I write, “I try to take a few moments every holiday season to remember the Christmas of 1968.” For the next 12 days, I will share some of those remembrances with y’all.

“There was no family gathering, no holiday feast. We got ourselves a tiny Christmas tree. It was so small I suspect it was like the tree in the cartoon classic A Charlie Brown Christmas – the tree nobody wanted.”
